QUAD, Questions of Theatre: The Xi’an Train

On a train bound for the Lishan Mausoleum in Xi’an, Sang-gon eagerly anticipates the underground palace of Qin Shi Huang and its countless terracotta warriors. Reflecting on the emperor’s longing for eternity, he looks back on his own life and love—things he has never fully possessed or had reciprocated—as a Korean with a Chinese mother. Having spent his life on the margins, Sang-gon finally confronts his own story in the presence of an immense desire for immortality.
